Fortified Home

Back to Projects

Project Summary

Fortified Home is an application for 'on the go' contractors, home owners, and architects to better build resilient homes. This app teaches the customer how to fortified parts of their house to stand up against the worst types of weather.

User Goals

1. Learn about the Fortified Home Program Offerings

2. Learn how to improve specific elements of your house (i.e. Roof)

3. Changing profile & specifications (scenario: you’ve moved)

4. Successfully complete the designation process to achieve the insurance discount.

5. Create my new project to track progress on designation levels.

User Personas

The Architect

Bob is partially retired and has been in the architectural business for 37 years. He is a Florida native but has worked in multiple states up the east coast. He has designed homes in both inland and coastal cities. Bob is interested in adapting to new technology to continue improving his work efficiency. He is also interested in learning new methods for designing homes to be weather resilient. He struggles with the use of technology, but is open to learning for work purposes.

The Homeowner

John is a general contractor who specializes in building upscale custom homes. He has over 15 years experience in the industry. He wants to build more resilient homes that will withstand weather and destructive storm elements over time. He’s looking for a way to organize projects and better communicate with future clients. John would like guidance on how to build safer homes for the coastal area region of North Carolina.

The Builder

Grace owns her own medical practice in North Carolina. She is very busy with work but wants to be involved in the build process from a review perspective. Working with a reputable contractor is very important. She uses digital media often and can easily communicate and share via social media platforms. She is worried about being a coastal property and potential weather and storm costs/damage. Grace wants her new home to be safe and easily insurable.

Testing Methods

- Unmoderated Testing
- User Observation
- Visual Affordance Testing
- Scenario Testing
- Task Testing

After initial prototypes were created, I leveraged unmoderated testing techniques to experience how different users interacted with the application. Our test included architects, contractors, builders, and homeowners all with a variety of insight received from testing.

This testing was leveraged once again after wireframes were refined.

A/B Testing

Initially creating multiple iterations of the prototype and navigational architecture allowed for A/B testing with both of the primary target groups. By utilizing multiple iterations and users for testing, I was able to quickly and effectively rule out past solutions that did not provide the highest end-user experience.

Focus Groups

I leveraged multiple focus groups, split into two focused areas: the builder side and the homeowner side. The reason being is that these two target groups have distinctly unique goals and needs from the application. I was concerned about influences that each could carry into a combined focus group.
